I mean... I guess it could have the M package, right?
... Maybe it has a swap? My bimmer-fu is weak but I was fairly certain this body style was not avaliable with the M-power... Am I wrong?

I sort of wish BMW had made an M e36.5, a friend of mine has the 316 compact and it's quite fun, and the shape hasn't aged terribly either.

I don’t know why they’re so unpopular, it’s probably the first modern BMW I would choose to own.

Give me a 540i with the M-Sport package and I’m good.

BBS wheels, decals galore ... I won’t say kill it with fire, but someone needs to save it.
And how funny would it be if it had an automatic?

It’s crossed my mind a couple of times, but it’s fairly hard to find a decent example in the e36 318 or 320. The e46.5 did come with a 2.5 i6 but they’re few and far between.

It was not. However, an s50 or s52 will slot straight in. Based off what I can see of the exhaust this is not the case here but who knows.

“Are you kidding? A hatchback? This looks like something the plebs would drive! I didn’t get my JD at Harvard Law just so I could blend in with the poors. Get out of here with that, BMW!”

That would be tragic. Also stickers and BBS get a soft pass because they’re not dishonest in any way — but then there’s that M badge on the back... That is a no-go.

The trunkline is a little awkward and no option for a six. Also, being one of the cheapest modern BMWs you can find, you see a lot of people buying them just for the badge.
Source: I own an E36 Compact. I love it.

I almost bought one of them for £295... Dude sold it out from us the evening before we were supposed to collect it

Why does that sound really cheap?

Well, because it is, but there’s nothing more expensive than a cheap V8 BMW.
In hindsight it's probably no bad thing.

I always liked that car as well ... and I have never understood people who slap a badge on a car that doesn’t match. I didn’t put SHO badges on the side of a base Taurus - I bought an SHO. Same with my CRX Si - it was one.

I recently drove one. The super low window sills is so nice.

ti owner here. There were sport packages available on these cars that gave them some ///M badging. However, nothing like a full blown ///M on the back like that. Also that appears to be a base or active model and not a sport. Here’s a taste of what came on mine:
M3 steering wheel (‘99 model year only)

Basically a clownshoe (e36 front suspension with e30 rear). Could be swapped. Only cool if you actually race it.
